An Artful Weekend!

We all sure had an artfully good time last weekend at our Young Women trip to Laguna and Newport Beach.  Unfortunately, many girls couldn't make it, which is really too bad, because we all had a really fun time!  Our first stop was Balboa Island where we had no problem locating the local candy shop.  What a sweet way to start the day!

After a short stop at the Newport Beach Marriott to unload, we drove down to Laguna Beach to the Sawdust Festival - a fun art show with sawdust all over the ground.  There was live music, hands on art projects, glass blowers demonstrating their craft, and lot of cool stuff.  We all found things we loved and got plenty of inspiration for ideas of projects we might want to try.

Movin' and groovin' to the beat of the live band.

Beautiful artwork made at the booth that said "ages 4-7."  Nobody caught on that they were a bit older than that.

The girls even got to try their hands at throwing clay on a pottery wheel.  Any excuse to get their hands dirty.

After a good hand washing , we left the Sawdust Festival we hiked downtown and found a yummy Italian restaurant.  Then later the girls pulled us all into a chocolate shop where they found the biggest candy apples and peanut butter cups ever!  Scrumptious!

Look who is feeling a bit artsy now!

But nobody saw the girls doing this because everyone was looking at...

hundreds of goats on the hillside behind them, right across from the festival.  Very random, but fun to watch.  They were getting as much attention as the artwork.

Finally, it was time for the Pageant of the Masters, the event we were all waiting for.  There was an art exhibit inside - much more high brow that the Sawdust Festival, but just as inspiring and fun.

There was even some French aristocracy costumes made out of bubble wrap!  It was pretty fascinating.  The big flowers on her gown are made from the bottoms of soda bottles.  Now there is a Halloween costume idea for you!

The show was really cool.  The curtains would open and the stage was set up to look just like a famous painting, only the people in the painting were all real people.  the didn't move a muscle.  They also did statues. It sounds strange, but was very cool.  Very well done!  We all really enjoyed what we saw!

Back to the hotel and into bed.  it had been a long, but fun day!

In the morning, once everyone finally woke up, we got to see a great view from our room. Yes, that is the ocean back there.

Then we all went to the beautiful Newport Beach Temple where we walked the grounds and tried a bit of the art of photography.

Three great girls!

I love to see the temple... I'll go inside someday!

Then after breakfast at Cocoa's, we went to the beach.  It was a beautiful warm day, and the water was so inviting.  After romping around in the waves for a while, Sis. V. had one more artsy idea up her sleeve.  She gave the girls a quick en plein air watercolor lesson right there on the beach.  Everybody got to paint, what else?  Seashells.

Then we headed for home - exhausted, happy, and a bit more artistically refined!  The only thing that could have made this trip any better would have been to have more great girls to enjoy it with.
